A hide is not decoration; it is one of the most important pieces of equipment in any reptile enclosure. Reptiles are prey animals, and without a secure, enclosed space to retreat into, they experience chronic stress that suppresses appetite, weakens immune response, and can shorten lifespan. As a veterinarian, I consider a properly sized hide as essential as correct heating or UVB. Every animal should have at least one hide on the warm side and one on the cool side so it never has to choose between thermoregulating and feeling safe.

When choosing a hide, look for a snug fit where the reptile contacts the walls and ceiling, a single entrance that blocks ambient light, non-porous and easy-to-disinfect material, and stable footing that will not tip. Match the size and humidity-holding ability to your species, and avoid sharp edges or paint that can flake. The right hide turns a nervous newcomer into a confident, feeding, healthy reptile.
